338 residents completed a Resident Survey in 2018.
Their responses have provided valuable information about how Schomberg residents use and think about Main Street. The information on this page is a summary of the results.
Residents fall into 3 distinct groups.
Regulars
“Regulars” represented 41.7% of respondents, and they tend to orient their lives around Main Street.
- They visit shops or restaurants on Main Street at least once per week, with 35% of them visiting 3 or more times per week.
- 55% visit the coffee shop/bakery at least once per week with 28% visiting 3 times or more per week
- 40% dine or get pizza at least once per week, with 11% dining 3 times or more per week
Of all the survey respondents, they are most likely to live on Main Street (23%), however, 20% of Regulars live outside of the village proper, but consider Schomberg to be their home, indicating that living close to Main Street is not a requirement to spending a lot of time on it. In fact, they find time to spend on Main Street even though 22% of them work in Toronto, and 24% of them work outside of Schomberg, such as in York Region, New Tec or Bradford West Gwillimbury.
Occasionals
“Occasionals” represented 30.8% of respondents, and they visit shops or restaurants on Main Street once every couple of weeks.
They are far less likely to live on Main Street than Regulars, as only 12% of them live on Main Street. 24%% of Occasionals live outside of the village proper, but consider Schomberg to be their home. Only 15% of them work in Toronto, and 28% of them work outside of Schomberg, such as in York Region, New Tec or Bradford West Gwillimbury.
While they visit Main Street less frequently than Regulars, their responses show very similar opinions. This is the highest income group, with 21.8% reporting household incomes of over $200,000.
Rarelys
“Rarelys” represented 27% of respondents, and they visit shops or restaurants on Main Street rarely or never. In fact, for many of them, the only time they come to Main Street is for a special event.
They are just as likely to live on Main Street as Occasionals (12%), but less likely to live outside of the Village proper (14%). 73% live in Schomberg but not on Main Street.
They are far less likely to live on Main Street than Regulars, as only 12% of them live on Main Street. 24%% of Occasionals live outside of the village proper, but consider Schomberg to be their home. 26% of them work in Toronto, and 28% of them work outside of Schomberg, such as in York Region, New Tec or Bradford West Gwillimbury.
Their lives appear to be oriented outside of Schomberg, and they consistently shop or dine outside of the village. This segment differs the most in its opinions about Schomberg.

Schomberg Residents Had a Consistent Vision for Main Street
83% felt heritage buildings are important to Main Street’s Character.
Main Street’s vision statement should include walkable, engaged community, historic gem and rooted in tradition.
40% of Respondents had comments at the end of the survey, illustrating how important Main Street’s future is to this community.
Many additional comments were about resident’s appreciation that this project is taking place.

“So happy that our beautiful village’s Downtown Main Street may be improved.”
Many comments were about additional shopping and Schomberg as a tourist destination,
“I would like to see more boutiques, cafes, and clothing/gift shops, to encourage people to walk around town.”
“I’d like to see the Main Street be a bit more like Kleinburg. A vibrant community for the locals but also visitors. A number of places to shop, eat or just visit.”
“Main Street Schomberg is a historical gem and a opportunity to crate a small attractive business community. It requires shops such as used book store ,art and craft galleries. It has the potential of becoming a tourist destination like other successful historic sites. It lacks a variety of unique attractive shops.”
Many comments were about maintaining tradition and keeping it quaint.
“Keep it classic…a place to live, love and raise a family. Schomberg has heart it’s called Main Street.”
“Schomberg is a beautiful little town and I would love for a balance between keeping it’s traditional character on Main and modernization as we grow.”
“I love Schomberg but I think just a bit of liveness to main street would be amazing to attract the area more and increase its value! It would be nice maybe to have it like history beauty and also a bit of moderness!”
